Project story
Set within a private estate in the Dinokeng Nature Reserve, Lantern House takes advantage of an unusual level of privacy to create a home that is open to its surroundings.
Generous glazing, carefully positioned windows and areas of glass brick allow light to move through the building throughout the day. At night, these openings transform the house into the project’s defining idea — a lantern glowing quietly within the landscape.
Large terraces at both ground and first-floor level extend the living spaces towards the reserve and create elevated places from which to experience the surrounding bush.
A small natural pool doubles as a watering point, allowing the landscape and animal life to move closer to the architecture rather than being held at a distance.
